Hospital 57357 modernises, automates, and digitises to go paperless and bolster communication, research, and patient survival rates

One day in the early 1980s, Dr. Sherif Abouel Naga made a vow. As the pediatric oncology physician at Egypt’s National Cancer Institute, he saw 13 of the ward’s 16 children perish from cancer. From that day forward, Dr. Abouel Naga pledged to dramatically improve the pediatric oncology ward to accelerate the strive for a cure and achieve better survival rates.

After a decade of effort built 100 percent on donor funding, the pediatric oncology program was transformed from a 1-room, 8-bed ward to a 120-bed modern clinic treating 150 patients a day and 1200 new cases each year. Soon after, a separate hospital for children with cancer was built and The Children's Cancer Hospital Egypt 57357 (CCHE), better known as Hospital 57357, was born. After 14 years, Hospital 57357 improved overall survival rates from 40% to 71%.

Hospital 57357’s vision is “to be the unique worldwide icon of change towards a cancer-free childhood.” To do that, donors and clinicians worked to overcome resource shortages, out of-date equipment, and inadequate processes. The goal was to establish a state-of-the-art pediatric oncology facility to create a better tomorrow for children with cancer. Going paperless was key to this goal.

Paperless helps accelerate care

Hospital 57357 recognised from the beginning that striving for a cure was dependent on a strong research initiative. As a result, the hospital deployed the most advanced health information technology to completely digitise operations, create a strong, easily searchable database, and establish a paperless facility.

Why 57357?

Built on 100 percent donor funding, the CCHE has conducted many popular and highly-visible fundraising events. To remind people how to donate, CCHE called itself Hospital 57357, the number of its bank account. The name has endured.

The hospital selected the Iron Mountain InSight Content Management solution, to enable paperless capabilities. The solution includes scaning, data extraction, indexing, workflow automation and storing records with a seamless, easy to navigate interface. Hospital 57357 digitised over 2 million backfiles, including patient, doctor, and pathology documents.

In addition, the hospital created a new patient record taxonomy, enabling the classification of structured and unstructured data. This enables hospital staff to have quick access to more holistic information to help accelerate care.

Automation advances research for cures

The Iron Mountain InSight Content Management solution also helps Hospital 57357 automate document management and workflows for the validation and tracking of patient care, along with research projects.

Iron Mountain InSight Content Management solution has also helped the hospital enhance its internal department-to-department operations. Specific areas of operational improvement include reduced errors, increased cost efficiency, and freed-up hospital resources to focus on other priorities.
